Bought as a gift for my 5 year old daughter. With a little assistance from me she was able to do most of the assembly herself and she gave it a "custom" paint job just for fun. Be sure to buy engines and a 9v battery as those are not included. Buy more than one pack of engines and make sure the first is a low power engine like an A8-3 to use until you get a sense of how high you want it to go for your location. My daughter loves launching this and then chasing it down to catch it when it lands. A great toy as it teaches some hands on building skills, how to follow directions and gets kids excited about science, engineering and design while at the same time being fun, exciting and cool. Cool? Yes cool! Launching this at our local park always generates a crowd of onlookers and kids of all stripes asking where they can buy one. My daughter and her friends now always ask if we can build a rocket big enough for them to go into space. I dearly hope that one day they get their wish and perhaps playing with this is what inspires the person who makes it possible.

The only issues for novice rocketeers to be aware of is that 1. rockets are cheap but engines are not. engines will make the launch cost be between 2 and 5 dollars EACH time depending on where you get them and what you pay for shipping. It is possible to buy in bulk at hobby shops and save a bit of cash 2. the 9v battery in your launch controller needs to be fresh to ignite the engines. bring a spare to your launch site to avoid disappointment and 3. be sure to follow the included safety guidelines. These are black powder powered and if you are not careful fire or burns are possible. In other words adult supervision is required.

review

After becoming addicted to small flying craft through the purchase of a SYMA 107 Helicopter, my eventual progression was the Hubsan X4. I have made my way through various infrared and 2.4GHz models and found very nice company with the Hubsan X4. This is a craft with fairly steep learning curve the first few times out, but the sheer stability of the thing will keep you coming back.

If you read reviews of the X4 you will see that they make the Hubsan X4, Traxxas QR-1, and Estes Dart. I have personally found that radios, flight boards, props, batteries, and motors to be cross compatible across models. There are slight variations, but ultimately the same factory makes them all.

To date, I have not yet met a person that is not immediately awed by the sheer performance of this thing. It is fast, nimble, and goes really stinkin high. Not to mention this improved version is most definitely a step in the right direction.

The most obvious difference is the added LED's on the arms. This was one of my biggest frustrations with the original. When the battery has drained to around 35% the front LEDs would blink to indicate it was time to come in before the whole thing shut down. Unfortunately, flying in daylight made this nearly impossible to determine, and I have replaced many a prop and motor due to over zealous flight times. Although still difficult to see in full sunlight, the blink is quite noticeable when the X4 gets close. I have not yet had a crash due to battery shutdown. Also, the LEDs bring an entirely new element, NIGHTFLYING!!! Yeah, I love flying at dusk, but with the old version this almost always turned out bad because I would quickly loose my bearing trying to determine the white from the black props. In the shadows it is all dark. Now flying in the dark is no big deal, in fact it is sometimes preferable. Both the blue and white LEDs shine nicely off the black and white props (I was wondering how well this would work with the black ones).

Other improvements like the shortened motor shafts make a huge difference, one wrong move wont send you to the work bench armed with a soldering iron and replacement motors. I began cutting motor shafts on the original version before I knew they were doing a 2.0.

Flight characteristics are the same as the original, and the ability to turn off the auto flip feature has made it that much more capable. It is small enough that it can go just about anywhere. I am truly impressed that after flying these things for quite some time, I keep coming back. If I have a catastrophic crash, I will most certainly be purchasing another.

UPDATE!!

Remember to calibrate often! I have recommended this quad to friends, but they have become frustrated that they crash so often. I realized that I forgot one tiny but important detail. Calibrate before every flight! Before every flight I place the hubsan on a level surface, I pull the left stick (Throttle, Yaw) to the lower right then wiggle the right stick (Pitch, Roll) left and right a couple times until the eyes flash. There are plenty of Youtube videos of this process and makes the craft much more stable.

This is a great flying little quad, although it has been fairly windy since this has been delivered I have still enjoyed it, it does fair in light wind but it is a very light little machine and a gust of wind will pick it up and carry it away fairly quickly, It's a tough little bird though, I hung it up in a tree yesterday and instead of freaking out I looked and saw how it was hooked to the tree then I flew it right off the branch fairly easily, then instead of getting hung up even further up the tree I let it fall the rest of the way down, it smacked just about every branch on the way down and really don't even have a scratch on it.

The camera is a fairly decent little camera although I upgraded the MicroSD card fairly quickly, the 1gig card fills up pretty quick. I use a USB cable to copy the video files to my computer instead of taking the SD out every time I'm sure taking the card in and out so much will wear it out fairly quick.

The remote is great, it feels comfortable in hand and has digital trim settings and a digital readout showing throttle setting, remote battery life, trim settings, camera settings, etc, it also has the 360 inversion button you can tap to make the quad do flips, be sure to have some altitude before doing this a be ready to hit the throttle again to keep the quad from hitting the ground, you can also use the top left button for this, press it and when it starts beeping you can tap you rudder controls up, down, left, or right ta make it flip in the direction you like, this is a little more fun than just the 360 inversion.

Other than that there is not much more I can say about this Quad other than I love it, I do plan on building my own quad in the future and this is giving me some great training on the physics of a quad and how to fly one.

Let me add that some proper care an manteinence of your LiPO batteries will make them last long, There are many videos on Youtube on proper care of your batteries but here are some tips.

* Your batteries will come from the factory charged, but not fully, Charge them fully before flying.

* Do not run your battery down all the way, leave about 20% power in the battery, you can purchase voltage alarms that will buzz at a specified

voltage.

* after flying wait about 15 minutes for battery to cool down before re-charging.

* when putting batteries up for storage do not fully charge them, charge them about 80%.

** UPDATE **

12/18/2013 - A much as I hate to say because I enjoy this little quad, the left rear motor is burnt out and the quad will not fly anymore, I could replace the motor but I believe that at the pricemark that these quads are priced the motors should last longer than this So I am shipping it back for a refund, I hate that I have to do this because it was a fun little copter to fly... I'll take away one star from my review because I really

did enjoy this quad.

I will update this review in a month or so to let you know how everything is going.
